JT designed the 9.6-mile reconstruction of rural STH 73 between I-39 and Deerfield in Dane County. The project was completed on an accelerated schedule of 22 months to ensure that the roadway was available to serve as an alternative route during I-39 reconstruction.
This project involved safety enhancements at 14 intersections along the project corridor. Additional safety improvements included flattening two substandard horizontal curves that had been contributing to truck overturning. Profile improvements were also incorporated throughout the corridor to improve safety and sight distances. Geometric enhancements were particularly important at the WIS 73 – CTH A intersection, which had been the site of two fatal crashes in recent years attributable to poor intersection sight distance and approach visibility. The WIS 73 – CTH A intersection had profiles along the mainline and side road legs significantly modified to bring visibility along the approaches up to standards.
JT Engineering served as the lead roadway designer as part of a larger consultant team to deliver this $11 million project. JT’s project responsibilities included horizontal and vertical geometric design of the roadway, corridor/surface modeling, miscellaneous quantity preparation, earthwork computations, report writing, and cost estimates.
The WIS 73 project was the recipient of the 2015 ACEC Wisconsin Engineering Excellence Award for Significant Contribution on a Project by a Small Firm.
