I-39/90, I-43 Interchange
Rock County
Transforming Connectivity

The scope of this mega project was immense, encompassing 2.25 miles of mainline reconstruction and expansion, a diverging diamond interchange, three steel and four concrete bridges. The project demanded excellence in coordination, innovation, and efficiency.

This project signifies a critical infrastructural upgrade, enhancing safety and functionality for over 97,000 daily corridor users. Replacing the former cloverleaf interchange with three flyover ramps enabled smooth and free-flowing traffic movements.
The Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) has markedly improved connectivity for the City of Beloit, extending WIS 81, and linking the Gateway Business Park and residential areas with accessible paths to the west side of I-39/90.
Built over a span of three and a half years, the I-39/90 and I-43 Interchange project stands as a benchmark in modern safety and infrastructure. The success of the project, realized in November of 2021, can be attributed to meticulous planning and execution.
Major work items on the project encompassed handling complex staged traffic shifts, laying both concrete and asphalt pavement, constructing concrete masonry, and installing essential components such as storm sewers, culvert pipes, beam guards, and overhead sign structures. Additional improvements included landscaping, erosion control, lighting, electrical work, and the incorporation of ancillary concrete.
This achievement is more than just a network of roads and bridges; it stands as a legacy of connectivity, a symbol of collaborative success, and an enduring asset that will serve the region for generations.

The project team capitalized on reduced traffic volumes from March to May 2020 to complete stages of work more quickly, minimizing traffic disruption. Daytime work on large steel girders weighing up to 215,000 pounds also improved safety for workers.

Project safety was a top priority for the contractor, Corridor Management Team (CMT), and project staff, leading to daily reviews and continuous improvements. When challenges arose, the team quickly implemented changes. These swift actions demonstrated a strong commitment to safety and responsiveness, minimizing risks and enhancing the project’s success.
