Main Avenue & Lawrence Drive

City of De Pere

PROJECT PROFILE

Safety Up, Congestion Down

Despite challenging space constraints and an aggressive timeline the team successfully delivered a solution that greatly improved public safety, reduced traffic congestion, and balanced the needs of the client, WisDOT, and stakeholders while remaining on time and under budget.
The Opportunity

The Main Avenue and Lawrence Drive intersection is a primary gateway into De Pere’s downtown. The intersection had become a hotspot for traffic congestion, particularly during peak travel hours. The resultant backup into the adjacent roundabout led to unsafe conditions that required intervention. Moreover, the geographic layout posed unique challenges with a previously unusable parcel of land to the north, a restaurant driveway serving as the north leg of the intersection, and the popular WisDOT Park & Ride lot to the west. Balancing the needs of the City, WisDOT, and local stakeholders, JT seized the opportunity to transform this problem-ridden intersection into a safer, more efficient one.

The Outcome

JT navigated through the various concerns and constraints of the Main Avenue and Lawrence Drive project, converting a congested and dangerous signalized intersection into a safer, more efficient roundabout within an expedited timeline.

We systematically evaluated multiple construction staging options to ensure minimal impact and maintained access for businesses. The project team formed a strong partnership with WisDOT, overcoming initial hesitations about the proximity of the new roundabout to an existing one while satisfying the Park & Ride lot’s requirements.

We took the time to carefully integrate the new roundabout’s aesthetics and feel with the rest of the corridor, creating a cohesive and unified user experience. The result is a safer corridor with fewer traffic delays, an improved park & ride lot, and new commercial development opportunities, which were all accomplished within a tight timeline and under the estimated project budget.

Collaborative Approach
Balancing Stakeholder Interests

During the project, JT effectively balanced the interests of local businesses, stakeholders, and WisDOT, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of various concerns. This collaborative approach was critical in devising construction strategies that minimized disruption and maintained local business access.

Seamless Integration
Cohesive Design with Existing Infrastructure

The roundabout’s design was practical and aesthetically pleasing, aligning with the corridor’s existing roundabouts. This attention to detail ensured a unified and cohesive impression throughout the corridor, enhancing the overall driver experience.
